3 Important Things the Bible Says About Education

Heading off to college soon? Let's see what the Bible says about furthering your education and go over three lessons to learn before your first semester.

As Christians, God should be at the center of our lives, meaning we should consider Him in everything we do. If you’ll be off to college soon, there are a few lessons that are helpful to learn before you get to campus. Let’s see what the Bible says about furthering your education.

1. It’s more valuable than material things

Proverbs 16:16 says that having wisdom and understanding is better than having silver or gold. Nice and expensive items can be enjoyable, but there are very few things in life that can never be taken away, will never go out of style, and that truly make you a better person. An education is one of those things. Yes, we all go to college with the intention of getting great jobs and starting successful careers, but earning a degree offers much more than financial benefits. It enriches your mind and opens the door to new people, places, and ways of thinking. Don’t focus so heavily on the monetary perks of obtaining a degree that you overlook the most significant ones.

2. Study hard and prove yourself

2 Timothy 2:15 tells us that we should study and show God that we understand truth. This verse refers to knowing God’s word and being able to point out false teachings and philosophies, but it applies to education as well. As a student, you should indulge yourself in your work and be the best you can be. Take your classes seriously by preparing for them and staying a step ahead in your work. Four years can go by pretty quickly, and when it’s all over, you want to look back knowing that you gave it your all.

3. Always put God first

Matthew 6:33 says that above all things in our lives, we should seek God, and everything else will be provided for us. As important as education is, it should never come before your relationship with God. When we put Him in front of all of our concerns and ahead of everything we do, we can trust that He’ll look out for the other things. As the semester gets going, you’ll quickly realize that college requires hard work and more of your time. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, but always take time to talk to God. Encourage yourself with prayer and reading the Bible. From high school to college and beyond, life is full of times that challenge us and demand us to be at our best. Never forget that God is near, He’s willing to listen, and He’s able to help.

Jasmine Williams

Originally from southern Virginia, Jasmine Williams moved to Boston to study Business Administration at Northeastern University. Always up for adventure, she enjoys rock-climbing, hiking, outdoor picnics, and anything that lets her immerse in the beauty of nature and God’s creations. When taking it easy, she's a fan of reading a good book or simply relaxing to soothing music. While at Northeastern, Jasmine was able to make connections with high school seniors during their journeys of finding the right college. Becoming an orientation leader and a resident assistant shortly after her freshman year, she was able to see the joys and challenges of entering college from not only her own perspective but from the perspective of hundreds of incoming students as well. Jasmine pushes herself to keep an open yet grounded mindset; she understands the importance of living for God while being loving and welcoming to people of other beliefs and backgrounds.

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

I joined CollegeXpress just a few months ago. I had been struggling with severe anxiety, causing me to not be able to tour schools and make sure a college would be perfect for me. I came across CollegeXpress one day when I was searching for colleges online, and it completely changed the game. I was easily able to choose colleges that would suit me, and I also entered a few giveaways! Thank you so much!

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

To say that CollegeXpress is a helpful tool would be an understatement as it is much more than that. Before finding CollegeXpress, all I knew was that I wanted to go to college, it was going to be insanely expensive, and I felt lost. CollegeXpress has given me access to resources such as helpful tips for applications and scholarship [opportunities], and helped guide me in a direction where I feel confident moving forward and pursuing a career. CollegeXpress has helped instill a spark in me that makes me want to continue and supports me in doing so.
